The ornamental columns erected in front of Tian’anmen (the Gate of Heavenly Peace) were derived from the wooden pillars used by the ancient emperors Yao and Shun to solicit public criticism. A symbol of governance for the people, they remind those in power that serving the interests of the people is a principle they must always hold fast to. This people-centered philosophy, an essential component of the traditional ideals of governance, has played an important role in China’s millennia-old political mindset on unity.
